Objective

This case report describes a successful approach to replacing composite resin veneers in a patient with dental enamel hypoplasia who had undergone restorative procedures 15 years previously. Polydentia’s Unica Anterior matrices were used in the treatment. The patient was dissatisfied with the appearance and functionality of the old veneers due to wear and discolouration. Treatment involved removing the old veneers, preparing specific areas selectively, and fabricating new composite resin veneers. This resulted in a satisfactory aesthetic and functional outcome.

Case report

A 35-year-old male patient attended our dental practice, complaining that his old composite resin veneers no longer met his aesthetic or functional expectations. Following a clinical, photographic and radiographic assessment, we discovered defects in the development of the dental enamel on all of the teeth that had been treated with composite resin veneers 15 years earlier. The old veneers showed signs of wear and discolouration, and had lost marginal stability.

Preamble

Moulding and diagnostic wax-up:
The prepared teeth were precisely moulded to create study moulds. A diagnostic wax-up was then created based on these moulds to serve as a guide for making the new veneers.

4: Removal of the old restorative material:
All old restorative material was carefully removed using high rotation instruments with multilaminate tips with irrigation and suction systems to minimise damage to the underlying teeth.

6: Preparation of the dentin layer with delimitation of the dentin nipples
Selective tooth preparation: minimal preparation of the misaligned or rotated teeth was carried out in specific regions to ensure sufficient space for the new veneers while keeping the tooth structure as healthy as possible.

7: The restorative procedure was carried out using the Unica anterior matrix system in the final layer stage, which provided greater predictability in terms of shape and adaptation in the proximal and cervical regions, avoiding excess restorative material.

Finishing and polishing of the veneers was carried out to provide a natural visual appearance guaranteeing optimum aesthetics and function.

Results

The treatment resulted in a restored and highly aesthetic smile for the patient. The new composite resin veneers matched the natural colour, shape and texture of the patient’s teeth, meeting his expectations fully. He was satisfied with the aesthetic and functional results.

conclusion

This case study emphasises the importance of thorough planning, combined with the use of materials and techniques that deliver consistent aesthetic and functional outcomes. Long-term follow-up is crucial for ensuring the durability of restorations and patient satisfaction. The dental surgeon must consider the patient’s history and treatment options to achieve optimum results.
